Abstract

There is important concern for power system stability to have secure operation of system because instability of system has caused major blackouts in the past. Power system is large and complex network with a lot of interconnections and is exposed to different contingencies leading to different forms of instabilities. Transient stability is the dominant stability problem that has attracted industry’s attention. In an interconnected power system, generators are synchronized with each other. Large disturbance on the power system can cause loss of synchronism between the machines leading to transient instability. In this paper, Multi-Band PSS and STATCOM are employed to improve the transient stability of the system. The object is to reduce peak overshoot and settling time of oscillations. To analyse the effectiveness of designed system simulations have been carried out in MATLAB/Simulink. The results show that MB-PSS with STATCOM improves transient stability and voltage profile of power system.
